Bringing the UGH to the stage they brought aggression, speed and groove. NNGNN guitarist Rockwell said "It was an absolute pleasure to open such a beast of a show, every band hit home with authority. The bizarre chaos you are about to experience is far out, refreshing and off the wall. No matter who you are, it's time to turn up the speakers, sit up, wake up and listen. Asylums are a Cool Thing. Imagine those things missing from music right now. Imagine community and word of mouth rather than the omnipotent internet. Imagine the punk DIY ethic still burning, imagine vinyl and cassettes and video games and cartoons. Imagine "Post-Social Networking". Imagine "No Social Networking", even. Gravil have been on the whole tour with Hellyeah and Protafield, and they certainly seem like a good fit to Hellyeah.  A nice heavy twin-guitar sound and screaming/growling style vocals combine to give some damn good heavy metal.  Sadly though only around 20 or 30 people bothered to come and watch them, with the bar and outside smoking area being busier than the venue itself.  Still it's the punters loss as they missed a good opening band. Next up were Protafield who got a much bigger crowd, although the venue was still nowhere near busy – however that might have had more to do with the sound of the band.  Protafield were definitely an unusual choice to support Hellyeah as there's a really strong electronic element to the music – they mix dance beats with electric guitar and metal style vocals.  To me they seemed like a poor choice for the tour and really didn't impress me at all, [...]

This band has a psychedelic/ prog rock mix with a bit of a difference.  Yes, it is a concept album, and, yes, the songs have an underlying story running through them, but there is a bit more to their style. If anything, it has the same effect as a John Carpenter soundtrack as, as I'm listening to this, I have flashes of vampires running through my head. This album has a very hypnotic drum beat running throughout, especially on the track 'The Bell's' when Andrew(Angel Witch) Prestidge, a master of his instrument, incorporates the human heart beat as the backdrop to a song about not living. Not being a big fan of synths myself, I have to say that with the guitars on this album being kept quite soft and alluring and mixed throughout with passionate strings to embellish and fill their sound, I find myself slowly drawn into this album: it is a definite grower.  'Undoing Wrong' has a very dark mysterious message that relays depression and despair – but again the drum beat plays a big [...]

The Arizona based groove metal band Incite will smash your face in with their third offering, "Up In Hell". This is pure groove metal: a nice bass guitar carrying the songs, tight drums, aggressive vocals, a peppering of thrash and well-constructed breakdowns. I play groove in groove metal band, so it's neat to hear how the genre is being carried stateside. Incite have toured alongside the likes of Dillinger Escape Plan, Soulfly, Throwdown, Cavalera Conspiracy, and rightfully have received a lot of critical praise. The idea behind "Up In Hell" is summed up by Vocalist Richie Cavalera, "We live Up In Hell nowadays. The world is getting crazier all the time. Nothing seems like it's getting better. I felt like the song and the title perfectly encapsulated these days. We're all on our own, and we have to survive." The production of the record is top notch; everything sounds nice and heavy without being "too much" or simply a wall of noise (I can't stand that in modern metal). Producer Matt Hyde has done seriously great [...]

On this album the band are taking on more serious subjects in the lyrics including rape and domestic violence, and animal cruelty. Brief comments on a few tracks…. The album kicks off with "I sell my kids for rock n roll".  I short squeal of electric guitar takes us straight into it – there's no slow build up, just a second or two of guitar before the song is blasting out at full speed – fast drumming and good heavy guitars.  The chorus is fast and angry, then things slow slightly for the verses.  A great start to the album. Next is the first single from the album – To kill a man.  The song [...]

Okay, so it's a prog album, so some of you are probably expecting a handful of tracks with at least a couple of ridiculously long ones, but in fact you'd be wrong.  Instead you get a dozen tracks with the longest being just over 5 minutes long, so the songs are all actually fairly short by Prog standards.  The songs are at the rock end of the Prog spectrum – by that I mean it's not the sort of bizarre complex sounds that some hardcore Prog fans love, instead it's music that will appeal to most rock fans as this really does have a good heavy rock sound at it's core.  Of course there are plenty of elements to keep Prog fans happy [...]

Can you give the readers a quick introduction to the band? We're a 4 piece doom band from Guernsey in the Channel Islands.  The sort of place your nan comes to visit.  Phil is on vocals and guitar, Jon provides the hefty tone, Dano on bass and Taz smashes the drums.  We've only been in existence as a band since early 2013, but we've come far (for 4 bearded island folk) in a relatively short amount of time. How would you describe your sound? Blackened doomy sludge.  We definitely sit on the heavier side of doom and the guttural vocals really give it that dark edge, but there's still a groove. What has been the bands biggest achievement so far? Playing Bloodstock.  We only formed in early 2013, so all in all not a bad result.  As a band it must have been something like our 7th gig! [...]

This four piece from St Louis, Missouri have already released three Eps. This full length offering is around 23 minutes of pure naked aggression. I don't know how they chose the name, Shaved Women, as there isn't much information about them out there but Crass did a song called Shaved Women in 1979 and could well be one of their influences, along with bands like The Exploited and GBH. There were some good riffs and rhythm throughout, very intense but in general the songs were samey and the singing style rough and aggressive. I couldn't really make out most of the lyrics. Just Death the title track is super-fast, Is It Worth It starts off with some fast riffs reminiscent of Dick Dale and the Deltones' Miserlou, (the introduction music for Pulp Fiction) then merges into an aggressive Where Have All The BootBoys Gone by Slaughter and the Dogs. World of Change has a flavour of Junkie by Sham 69 but is rather monotonous. Not an album to listen to if you want a bit [...]

Yes, I know that's a contradiction, but that is genuinely the effect that 'Waves Ahead..' has:  it washes over you like a gentle wave before slapping you in the face with the acidity of the salt water it brings with it, easing your weary bones yet invigorating your senses with its subdued and understated energy. Weaving elements of classic southern groove into their overarching heavy doom sound, RAF have succeeded in producing a sound that almost defies genre-fication and proves rewarding on so many physical and psychological levels. We all chose a song that had some significance to us. My pick was 'They're Coming to Take Me Away' by NAPOLEON XIV because I have a vivid memory of my stepdad, who I considered completely insane, playing it over and over again on his car stereo when I was a pre-teen. The song is about being taken away to a mental institution. I can still see him tapping his fingers on his steering wheel to the beat..." BUTCHER [...]

Shot by over three days at W:O:A Open Air 2013, Bonet traversed all corners of the Wacken festival site to bring unique views of a community which comes together to form it's own state annually. Employing a sensibility that has seen him achieve World Press Photography awards for human documentation in the likes of Sierra Leone, Haiti, Chad and India, Bonet integrated with the people of Wacken to capture moments of action and emotion which present a unique view of this enormous festival. Complemented by an essay from Chirazi about the Wacken community, We The People of Wacken is a stunning portfolio which will appeal to anyone who enjoys fine photography and intriguing stories. Ensiferum Bassist Sami Hinkka offers the following update: "Hi folks! Only a couple more weeks to go! We head to Astia Studio on 8th of September and recordings will take around five weeks. We had really good and creative pre production sessions with Anssi Kippo so now we are very well prepared to give 110% on each take in the studio. Because the songs were almost ready when we made the demo versions of them, Mr. Mikko Mustonen is already arranging orchestrations on top of those. Gotta love technology! There are still few minor details to arrange and couple of lines of lyrics to twist and turn but nothing can stop us anymore! We are convinced that this will be ground breaking album for us and the whole genre. (Modesty? What's that?)" The album is tentatively scheduled for release worldwide on [...]

The band comments: "When discussing the concept for the album artwork [pictured right], we wanted to come up with something that would reflect the songs on the album and their subject matter.  Having settled on the title 'Of Roots And Flesh', we felt it would be appropriate to maintain the theme of 'roots' through the artwork, and eventually decided that a figure emerging from a chaotic mass of roots and branches would visually represent the struggle between humanity and nature that features in many of the songs on the album.  We also felt that the concept would harken back to imagery of the Green Man, a pagan deity often associated with rebirth." The South Yorkshire sextet discussed their ideas with the Lithuanian-born artist Augustinas NaÅ¡lÄ—nas, who would then bring the concept to fruition. Augustinas comments: "For my illustrations I mostly get the inspiration from my favourite surrealist artists like Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst and others; mainly people who drew upon the pre-Christian belief systems and magic [...]

As it is, they're fast approaching 20 years as a band having slipped under a lot of people's radars. That might be about to change, however. Released at the beginning of this month, their new self-titled album is the first to see the light of day on Sumerian Records and the first produced by Taylor Larsen. In addition to this, it is the first record to showcase the talents of bassist Aaron Deal and drummer Travis Orbin, who joined the band in 2012 and 2013 respectively. The album sees Darkest Hour take a more melodic approach to their music, something that may well ruffle the feathers of fans that have been with them since their humble beginnings in 1995. Thankfully, they haven't embraced it so much that the end result is watered down and fairly wishy-washy; it still packs enough punch to break your nose and cheek in one movement. Rapture in Exile will incite circle pits with complete ease whilst other highlights include opener Wasteland and the Bullet for My Valentine-tinged anthem Infinite Eyes. All the while, John [...]

We have been on a few great stages so far but I'd have to say that Bloodstock 2014 was the largest…That was a lot of fun. Set to be released on cassette tape and including a woven Ebauche Noire patch, Pochoir De Cendre comprises two tracks with a total running time of nearly 43 minutes. Formed in 2013 from the ashes of Alienante Damnation, Ebauche Noire leaves behind the conventional, traditional black metal genre and brings forth new ideas in outstanding songwriting and interpretation. A unique journey through quietude, innocence, nostalgia, and evanescent essences, the two extended passages that make up Pochoir De Cendre drift through melancholic black metal moods and emotional catharsis. Spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist and black metal luminary Adrien Weber (Lord Genocide, Vociferian, Macabra, Alienant Damnation), Belgium's Ebauche Noire is a new scion of cold and melodic post-black metal. Cover and tracklisting are as follows: Tracklisting: 1) The Sun and the Moon Forever Rise  [31.40] 2) Where Stars Like Tears Freeze to Crystal  [11:15] A promo video for the track "Where Stars Like Tears Freeze to Crystal" can be viewed below   Purchasing info can be found HERE.
