Wacken 2014 Festival Preview

With under 30 day go until the 25th Wacken and with bands like Accept being added to the line up last month the excitement is starting to build. I was last there in 2012 the year of torrential rain so I'm hoping this year it'll be different. There has been a few bands pull out of the festival for me I was sad to see Iced Earth and Death Angel cancel their appearances however this is one of the pitfalls about bands being announced far in advance other commitments/life can get in the way! Highlights on this year's bill for me are: Metal-Battle finalists all competing for the top prize. This highlights the extremely high calibre of talent that is around these day. Arthemis it has been ages since I last seen these guys live so looking forward to their set on Saturday 2nd August. Behemoth, Carcass, Hatebreed, Nightmare and Emperor all played superb sets at this year's Hellfest so I am looking forward to seeing them all slay Wacken! The Texas Flood, Young Dogs, Old Tricks.

This just released debut album by the three lads from Neath in Wales, is in my opinion just exceptional !!!  Packed full of veracious old school classic rockin riff's straight from the U.K.'s very own West coast, these guys I'm sure could out rock the very best the U.S. could possibly produce!   After reviewing their previous four trackThis just released debut album by the three lads from Neath in Wales, is in my opinion just exceptional !!!  Packed full of veracious old school classic rockin riff's straight from the U.K.'s very own West coast, these guys I'm sure could out rock the very best the U.S. could possibly produce!   After reviewing their previous four track EP on Planetmosh back in November 2013, I thought then that they could well be something special to look out for. Now with this new album, I think I was well justified in what I said at the time about the musical style and the brilliant professional feel they all project. I still stand by my comment that they have a real honest feel for the vintage sound, in an absolutely staggering way!! Not only have they got the grip of a titan around the neck of this genre, they've taken it, throttled it, and then remolded it to recreate their own unique sound! Kicking it off is the very loud and very lively track number one ' Cards'. "Put ya card's on the table!"  This is just what they have done with this opening song, with a corker of an opening riff. Hellfest 2014 - Overview Blog

I returned to Hellfest for the third time, but this year the advance weather forecast promises sun instead of rain! Well, it was correct and we now affectionately call it Dustfest due to the amount of dust being churned up from the parched arena! First impressions of the new changes to the site are great. As we headed from Nantes to Hellfest on our pre-arranged transfers we approached the site greeted by a huge guitar on the roundabout by the entrance. Then you spot the large sign posts, so you can find your way around. At check in there's friendly security and staff, I even got a quick lesson in French from the lovely lady that gave me my pass :) Walking into VIP/Press area I could see they had spared no expense adding in lots of new funky metal work, as well as a few shaded areas, including a domed army tent with a crashed helicopter sticking out of the top! Hellfest 2014 Review Blog – Friday 20th June

I arrive at Hellfest on a scorching sunny day which is unusual as it's normally overcast/rainy on the Friday when I arrive. I catch the end of Crossfaith tearing up the Main Stage and then very start of Fueled By Fire's set as I head off into Press sounds like the bands are warming up the crowd nicely. Tarja released "Colours in the dark" last year, and is now following that with "Left in the dark".  Rather than being a new album, it's a collection of alternate versions of songs from the album, single B sides etc.  "Left in the dark" was originally only available as an option when buying tickets for herTarja released "Colours in the dark" last year, and is now following that with "Left in the dark".  Rather than being a new album, it's a collection of alternate versions of songs from the album, single B sides etc.  "Left in the dark" was originally only available as an option when buying tickets for her tour in certain countries, so most people won't have had the chance to buy or hear this album. One of my pet hates is when a band or record label decides a few months after releasing an album, to reissue it as a special edition with a second disc of extras as this penalises the fans who bought the album early and rewards people who didnt.  For that reason I'm happy that Tarja hasn't done that but instead has chosen to release the bonus material as a separate album. One nice touch is the album cover.  Tarja launched a competition for fans to come up with a cover for it, and due to the high standard of entries, chose 10 winners instead of the planned five.  Of those ten obviously only one could win the prize of having their work on the cover of the [...]

The year leading up to its release has been a hard one for the lads, primarily due to numerous line up changes, but when all hope seemed lost the lads said "no!" and pulled together a solid lineup to take their listeners (and this reviewer) into their spooky location. The listener is immediately greeted by the title track, in the form of a musicial invitation full of powerful guitar riffs from founding member Phil Horner, and Karl Gibson who recently joined the band. The musical connection between the two is very apparent within the track, complimented greatly by the accompaniment of Steve Leager on bass guitar and Bogdan Walczak on drums, two members who are also rather new to the band. Vargas Blues Band have a strong release history, founded by Javier Vargas in 1991, they have released nearly 20 albums. Javier Vargas, who's recorded and performed with some of the world's heavy rock and blues hitters such as Santana, Double Trouble, Jack Bruce, Devon Allman, Larry Graham, Carmine Appice, Tim Bogert, Junior Wells, Glen HughesVargas Blues Band have a strong release history, founded by Javier Vargas in 1991, they have released nearly 20 albums. Javier Vargas, who's recorded and performed with some of the world's heavy rock and blues hitters such as Santana, Double Trouble, Jack Bruce, Devon Allman, Larry Graham, Carmine Appice, Tim Bogert, Junior Wells, Glen Hughes and Chris Rea to name a few, is still expanding his Blues and Rock collaborations, as this latest release features Carmine Appice, Paul Shortino and Bobby Alexander. The album is actually quite good, if not a little throw away, the songs are well written, nicely arranged, with a good blues lead featuring strongly in the mix, but overall it does lack a punch. I didn't once find myself looking at the sleeve to discover the song title, thinking "I will put that on again, later". If you're going to cover a song as timeless as The Everley Brothers 'Love Hurts', you had better try and beat what I consider to be the best cover version ever of this song, the one by Nazareth. The concert did not start for the next 20 minutes.@nilecatacombs @scordaturaband show reviewed by @AnybodyBC for @Planetmosh Half past seven in the Tuesday evening and next to the Audio club in Glasgow lined up a huge queue of metalheads, who were back from weekend festivals and eager to see American death metal legends – Nile. The concert did not start for the next 20 minutes until the place got completely packed. And when it finally started, there was Glaswegian metallers Scordatura on the stage to warm up the audience. These guys are very popular in Scottish death metal and grindcore gigs, so no surprise here. Great pick for opening act, especially for those, who have not been to gigs like this for some time. Enjoyable and great quality brutal death metal and long hair windmills in the front. That proved quite responsive audience, which was trying to make a mosh and some headbanging here and there. Everybody was still impatiently waiting for the Nile to show up. So 40 minutes of show and Scordatura was off the stage, preparations for the gig headliners began. Like most self-respecting music fans, I have a real bee in my bonnet about so-called "celebrities" attempting to jump on the rawk 'n' roll bandwagon and establish their street creds by recording an album and playing a few gigs before returning to their various degrees of infamy and disappearing back up their own backsides...  OverLike most self-respecting music fans, I have a real bee in my bonnet about so-called "celebrities" attempting to jump on the rawk 'n' roll bandwagon and establish their street creds by recording an album and playing a few gigs before returning to their various degrees of infamy and disappearing back up their own backsides…  Over the years, they've all been at it – from Z-list wannabe has-been soap opera characters to professional sports stars:  and, OK, it must be admitted that some of them have done it reasonably successfully – former WWE stars Amy 'Lita' Dumas and (especially) Chris Jericho undoubtedly have proven their credentials as serious contenders in the equally competitive world of rawk 'n'f'n' roll… Former World Superbikes champion James Toseland, however, is a completely different proposition, as the Doncaster-born motorcyclist is also a fully qualified concert pianist:  in fact, it was rumoured that his hands were insured for £! million each, should injury ever prevent him from playing again!  Having retired from the sport in 2011 – ironically, because of a wrist injury – he has now returned full-time to his first love… What also has to be admired about Toseland is, just like he clawed and [...]

At less than £1 per track it's an absolute bargain! Nightmare - The Aftermath.

If I was to name any French rock/metal bands I would only know Trust, Gojra or Shakin Street and now there is Nightmare, a very welcome addition to the list. I don't really know why they have not crossed my path before as they were formed way back in 1979 in Grenoble. I don't really know why they have not crossed my path before as they were formed way back in 1979 in Grenoble. Of their 9 studio albums, their latest is The Aftermath and contains 11 tracks of blistering heavy metal. The production is unbelievable with everything cranked right up to the max and is available now via AFM Records. Nightmare split from 1987-1999 and on their reformation existing drummer Jo Amore took over on lead vocals with his younger brother David taking over on the drums. A brief intro called 'The Aftermath' consists of an eerie spoken vocal with a grandiose orchestral backing which segues into the punching heavy riffs of 'Bringer Of No Man's Land'. It's a fine example of prime power metal and is a fine introduction to the gruff operatic vocal style of Jo, bringing to mind Udo Dirkschneider only with a bigger range. The quality of the album continues with 'Forbidden Tribe' with almost death metal riffing and some hefty double bass drumming. The vocals soar [...]

Grave Digger - Return of the reaper

German 80s metal band Grave Digger are releasing their latest album, "Return of the reaper" on 14th July 2014.  It's their seventeenth studio album - since they released their debut album in 1984, they've released albums every year or two (except for a six year split at the end of the 80s). Throw in their live albums and you're looking at a band that has released an album on average every 18 months consistently over a 30 year period – now that's hard working. A quick look at the track listing shows several common heavy metal lyrical themes are here – Witches, Satan and death.  That looks to me like the band going back to their roots lyrically, but the band don't always stick to these themes having released concept albums in the past about Scottish history  and based on the Richard Wagner opera, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Brief comments on a few tracks.. The album has a distinctive German metal sound, and opens with "Return of the reaper", a short intro which is a funeral march played on the piano, along with some sound effects of a horse approaching before there's a scream and the electric guitars kick in  [...]

Overkill release first track off new album

Thrash legends Overkill have posted a lyric video for the track 'Armorist', taken from their forthcoming 17th album, 'White Devil Armory': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZD8VIyj95Q&feature=youtu.be The band recently shot two videos with Kevin J Custer, for the tracks 'Armorist' and 'Bitter Pill'.  Overkill frontman Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth commented on working with Kevin again: "Fantastic to have Kevin on board again, whenThrash legends Overkill have posted a lyric video for the track 'Armorist', taken from their forthcoming 17th album, 'White Devil Armory': The band recently shot two videos with Kevin J Custer, for the tracks 'Armorist' and 'Bitter Pill'.  Overkill frontman Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth commented on working with Kevin again: "Fantastic to have Kevin on board again, when he's directing the direction is intense! Virgin Steele - 'Invictus'

This lavish re-issue of VS's 1998 opus is very much - as it was originally - a companion piece to the also re-packaged 'The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell I+II (reviewed here:  http://planetmosh.com/virgin-steele-the-marriage-of-heaven-and-hell-iii/) - and indeed serves as the third instalment of what eventually would becomeThis lavish re-issue of VS's 1998 opus is very much – as it was originally – a companion piece to the also re-packaged 'The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell I+II (reviewed here:  http://planetmosh.com/virgin-steele-the-marriage-of-heaven-and-hell-iii/) – and indeed serves as the third instalment of what eventually would become a quartet of themed albums (the fourth and final part, 'Ghost Harvest', was originally scheduled to be the bonus disc with this edition, but instead this 19-song epic has been saved for a forthcoming box set), but also a stand-alone album in it's own right. There are a number of differences between 'Invictus' and its two predecessors.  For a start, the storyline is more focussed – telling the tale of Endyamon and Emalaith (a character first introduced in the second part of 'The Marriage…') in their battle against the gods, representing humanity's fight against oppression and tyrany, in no matter what form it takes… Secondly, it is more ambitious. Perhaps able to avail of an increased budget after the success of the first two albums, there is a greater use of orchestration and sound effects, while retaining their basic chest-thumping bravado – especially in relation to David DeFeis' bombastic and overblown lyrical content vocal [...]
