In May's Eurovision Song Contest, Finland is represented by learning disabled punk band PKN (Pertti Kurikan Nimipiavt) who toured with Zombie Crash in 2013. Could there be a time when such mainstream acceptance and appreciation of learning disabled artists happens here? It's what Ryan and his band have been working towards for years. They have broken loose of the usual gigs and events that learning disabled artists get to play, supporting bands Hey Colossus, Jett Black and Sauna Youth, and storming the Supernormal Festival. Zombie Crash now make their biggest stab for stardom with the release of the music video 'Hardcore On Tour', premiered on Louder Than War. "The story of the video" says lead guitarist Ryan "is that we [Zombie Crash] are doing a homecoming gig at the end of a hard tour and find that a boy-band has been given a slot on our stage. We don't take kindly to this.  Zombie Crash has no time [...]

Fans can pre-order the compelling album and a variety of rare and unique items through PledgeMusic at http://www.pledgemusic.com/dommin. Enigmatic frontman and guitarist Kristofer Dommin reveals, "'Rise' is a musical evolution. I don't enjoy repeating myself creatively so this album offers fans another face of the band. The songs are more empowering, maybe a bit more pissed-off, and definitely a lot more tongue-in-cheek." Dommin's keyboardist, Konstantine, sums it up with one word, "swagger." Metal Hammer are premiering the title track's dazzling new lyric video at: http://metalhammer.teamrock.com/news/2015-04-30/dommin-return-to-the-fold-with-rise and it will also be added to Dommin's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/DomminBand in due course. 'Rise' is the follow-up to the band's impressive debut 'Love Is Gone', released in 2010 by Roadrunner Records. Described as "the voice of the broken-hearted," that album saw the quartet defining a new era of underground goth-inspired alt rock, influenced by the likes of The Doors, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Rammstein, [...]

I've long been a fan of the blues rock genre, so I was interested to listen to Old Glory and the Wild Revival.  It's difficult not to immediately think of Gary Moore or Joe Bonamassa when you think of blues rock, but there's always room for [...]

The Franklys 'Bad News' produced by Sean Genockey (RedRacer) and mastered by Ed Woods (Muse, Roger Daltrey), deals with the consequences that will come from your choices. Bad News sees Zoe Biggs's haunting heavy bass lines, Nicole Pinto doing what good drummers do; make their instrument so much more than a time-keeper. The pocket-sized bundle of dynamite that is Fanny Broberg letting rip with searing lead guitar work and Jen Ahlkvist continues with her bitter sweet and ever-so-edgy vocals. Accompanied by an ominous and forboding video, directed by the band's Nicole Pinto, set in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. With a lineup consisting of five out of seven Jess and the Ancient Ones members, the band's debut album, simply titled I, will hit the streets on June 15th via Svart Records (Witch Mountain, Messenger, Acid King) According to Thomas Corpse, the idea behind the new combo was to find an outlet for material which the prolific songwriter found incompatible with the Jess and the Ancient Ones concept. The album is culled from lengthy recording sessions held in Kuopio, Finland in the winter of 2013 and 2014, and these sessions also produced another album's worth of excellent material, which will see the light of day on the next release, II, in the spring of 2016. Despite the relaxed nature of the sessions, these are not jam-based improvisational tracks but strong, carefully planned compositions.  The music is laid back and soulful, influenced by classic rock, with powerful female vocals. JustNordic Giants have unveiled the short film for 'Rapture', the lead track from the elusive duo's debut album A Séance Of Dark Delusions released through Kscope on May 4th. The video premiered at Wonderland who said, "[it] is nothing short of a cinematic feat, it's like a full feature with the dialogue cut out. Just as dramatic as the imagery is the music." The visually stunning piece features jaw-dropping landscapes and sees a pair of post-apocalyptic inhabitants traverse sandy beaches, chilling mountaintops and sprawling countryside in a captivating story of dark dedication. The touching themes of otherworldly environmentalism and ecological decay are intriguing and affecting in equal measure. They also expand further the creative process of Nordic Giants as the duo themselves self-produced, directed and edited the magnificent film. The song 'Rapture' is a beautifully dramatic taste of the band's debut album. Operatically charged by Beth Cannon's vocals, the song's cavernous yet sacred sentiments crawl beneath the skin with their poignant key chimes, creeping synths and choral backing. Largely instrumental, the album A Séance Of Dark Delusions reflects the inspired musical experimentation and atmosphere of Sigur Rós, 65daysofstatic, Björk and Pink Floyd. Jeffery Johns, affectionately known as Big Jeff, is in attendance tonight at the Marble Factory, having turned down the chance to see Russian Circles down the road at one of Bristol's more established venues. Something of a legend in the local music scene, the general consensus is that if he's at the same gig as you then it's going to be a good one. Let's find out, shall we? A little off the beaten track and somewhat overshadowed by the drug-fuelled club nights held in sister room Motion, the Marble Factory has only been a venue for a number of months but it's building a good reputation, with names like Uriah Heep, Therapy? and Delain playing there over the coming year. It benefits from great acoustics that opening act Hyena (8) take full advantage of; a four piece with great energy and a wicked grunge sound, the applause for them increases after every song, with Mental Home and Forget My Name being particular highlights. Plus, you can't go wrong with a song called Dog Breath. Southampton's Dolomite Minor (8) take things up a notch; for a band who only have two members they sound huge, again taking grunge elements [...]

Beasts They're supported on this tour by London based trio Beasts, who were out of their depth in what they said was the biggest show they'd ever played.  I'm sure they're trying hard to make the most of this opportunity but the general consensus from the crowd around me was that a bit less swagger and a bit more work is needed. Theory of a Deadman After what seemed to be the majority of people not enjoying the support the crowd was more than ready for the main act and the volume levels went through the roof as the band took to the stage.  As it turned out playing a headline set really did give them the chance to show off their talents as they made their way through a set that included [...]

He plays with an acoustic guitar and uses a device to record short bits of playing then replay them in a loop which means he's able to play more complex stuff than if he just used the acoustic guitar alone. It's a good set that includes material from both his albums, and his talking to the crowd between songs comes across well.  It's a good start to the night, but most people here are here for the headliner, South African guitarist Dan Patlansky. When Dan Patlansky and his band take to the stage there's a definite cheer, and they kick off with an instrumental, Drone, before the distinctive riffs of his single "Backbite" take things up a notch.  While Dan sings and plays guitar, he's backed by a drummer and a bassist, so with just the three of them the small Borderline stage seems far roomier than normal, giving them freedom to move around as they want. This is the first UK tour for Dan Patlansky and he goes all out to put in a performance to impress the crowd.  As tonight is the release date of [...]

With their previous album 'Manala' having been release in 2012, this has indeed been a long wait. So, the questions remains…has the wait been worth it? If you are a fan of their previous albums, the combination of folk and heavier styles and the fast, rhythmic beats that, even on first listen, clearly translate even better for a live audience…then yes. As with their previous releases, 'Noita' does everything you would both expect and hope for whilst managing to go that step further. 'Viinamäen Mies' kicks things off with the upbeat, happier tone that you imagine if thinking of Korpiklaani and one that calls to you to grab those nearest to you and dance/jump/generally move about with the rhythm. There's no let up either with their next track, as it's faster and very even on rhythm throughout. Aside from a very brief break in the melody about two-thirds of the way through, it keeps up that pace till the end. Again this is another track I would immediately want to hear live as throw in a few beers, some random people and [...]

It was made clear by the chanting sounds of the tribal groups at the beginning of the song all the way to the frantic chorus. It sounded like chaos. Possibly the heaviest song Armored Saint has ever written. "I continue to marvel at the amount of garbage that's created on our planet. Whether it's food or other disposable items. We could blame groups like Monsanto and that would certainly be valid, but it all comes back to personal accountability. We could all do better. Waste dirty's up our beautiful cities and planet. Bombastic, hard-driving, generation-spanning rock n' roll with instantly memorable, sharp-as-hell hooks propel Everclear's new studio album, Black Is The New Black. Muscular but melodic, this is the sound of a band driven and united by singular, intense purpose. The songs rip forward with palpable swagger, supercharged by a mix of autobiographical exorcism and narrative storytelling, from the gut and throat of Everclear's singer, guitarist, cofounder and songwriter. Alexakis comments: "This is a very honest recording. No gimmicks. Not many bells and whistles. All the riffs on this record are things that really just resonated with me and the band, musically and lyrically – from the get-go." Everclear have released a lyric video for 'The Man Who Broke His Own Heart', a song that manages to encapsulate the spirited essence of everything that makes this band great. Confidence, self-deprecation, recrimination, and redemption all collide in the barnstorming rock radio anthem. Everclear's ninth studio album, Black Is The New Black is out now in the UK. The album is a diverse and timeless collection, without ballads and without nostalgia. This is a heavy guitar record. It's a throwback to [...]

These recordings and the theme itself were than transformed by David Cross into the album 'Starless Starlight'.   Robert Fripp's approach to the guitar and soundscaping is both human and symphonic and is complemented by the range and uniquely warm sound of Cross's electric violin. Improvisation remains central to Cross's toolkit, with loops and samples of Fripp's guitar providing a sense of metre – occasionally rhythmic but mostly cascading through the tracks like waves on the shore.   Cross's technique of 'back composing' from recorded improvisations enables a hybrid music with the best features of the ephemeral and the permanent. David Cross describes this process, "It's a kind of time travel, listening backwards to where the music came from and exploring forwards to find out where it might lead."   The final stage was achieved [...]

In 2015, the band celebrated 20 years together, partially with the release of One Man Army, their critically-acclaimed release for Metal Blade Records. After the band's European tour, Iris spoke briefly with Petri Lindroos about the band, their latest release, and their thoughts on music in general. (As a bonus, Petri educated Iris on the difference between Finnish "humppa" music and American "country" music, which gloriously opened a whole new genre-door for exploration!)   I see the terms "folk metal" and "pagan metal" being used to label Ensiferum. What do those labels mean to you, and are they accurate? What do you feel are the "core elements" of your sound? Well I think the term "Folk Metal" fits the best for us, since that's the thing that got Ensiferum started in the first place – a long time ago – and all those elements are still heard in our music. The core comes from our main songwriter Markus's hands, and we then all give our input on top of that, to make [...]

The enigmatic frontman has returned with his new band the Rattlesnakes and, ahead of a UK tour, has recorded the Rotten EP, due out on the band's own International Death Cult label on May 4th. People who have followed the goings on of Carter will already be aware of 'Fangs' which debuted on Radio One late last month; two and a half minutes of raw, punk perfection that threatens to rip your windpipe out and shove it back down your throat, but it's the anarchy of the other two tracks that will have everyone grinning from ear to ear. Both show off Frank's superb lyrical prowess: 'Paradise' includes the chorus 'Your paradise does not exists; it's a doom that's full of emptiness' and a quite stunning breakdown that sees him scream 'You coward fucking scum!' whilst 'Primary Explosive' opens with the words' Are you burning in the blackened sky/acetone peroxide, bleached white eyes'. Musically menacing throughout, there's a genuine feeling that at any point two hands will reach out of your music player and throttle you good and proper. Best of all though is [...]

Stream of Passion are a band I've seen several times and they always impress.  Singer Marcela Bovio has a superb and very versatile voice, while the band are not only highly proficient musicians, but also put in very energetic performances, headbanging like crazy and leaping into the air. Tonights set includes songs from their latest album and also from earlier albums as well as a cover version that regularly appears in their sets – their beautiful cover of the Radiohead song "Street spirit". As well as singing, Marcela also plays violin on one song – her Red Flying V violin has to be one of the coolest looking violins around, and she plays it beautifully. It's a great set, and judging by the number of people here tonight wearing Stream of Passion T-shirts they had a lot of fans in the crowd, and certainly the cheers and applause the band receive supports that.  An excellent set from a band that deserves to be headlining venues of this size. Although having spotted the picture of the accomodation they stayed in when they played Consett (see pic) I'm 100% certain that isn't where Raz White would have arranged for Swedish Rockers Confess to stay when they came to play Rebellion in Manchester. Holly Bank Caravan Park is more likely! Jacob – Bulletproof Rose Bulletproof Rose a four piece from Cumbria were the opening act and at 8ish the venue wasn't too busy, despite that these guys played their music 'Loud Hard and Fast' from the opening bar, although the first song was Strung Out and Jacob had his hair flung out all over the place. At the end of the song he announced 'Alright Manchester? We are Bulletproof Rose going to play some Rock n Roll for you!' and then came In the Gutter which ended with Jacob guitar aloft. They played all the songs from their début EP and a new song  Use it or Lose it [...]
