The London Souls. Shame on me, because this was the best I've ever seen Rival Sons and if I'd missed it I'd have really regretted it.  There was a moment of clarity, when they played Where I've Been, when I realised that feeling ill or not, I was right to drag myself up there.  The team here at Planetmosh, we're an eclectic bunch.  We don't all listen to the same music, but we're all in the team for the same reason.  We give up our spare time to listen to albums, go to gigs, take photos and write reviews for nothing other than the [...]

By the time Omnium Gatherum took to the stage at 6.30pm, the venue was already around 90% full – almost unheard of for such an early time.  Right from the start it was clear that the Finnish band had plenty of fans in the crowd – I've never seen such a great reaction from a London crowd for an opening act as Omnium Gatherum got.  Their death metal sound went down a storm – a superb start to the night. "We've pushed the bar upward again, but at the same time, we've kept the signature sound of the band intact." "Thematically we've moved from the outer space of Fantastic Planet to inner space," explained Greg Edwards. "From the dislocation of one's identity to the complete erasing of it by sleep and dreams. I think we've used instrumentation in the service of mood and emotion to an even greater degree than on our previous records." I couldn't see all the bands due to prior commitments so I haven't done a review but the event raised deserves a mention. I went on the Saturday evening and managed to see most of Psychobabylon's set and all of The Senton Bombs extended set (see below) and I got a few comments from members of the audience so this is just a general overview. The Snooty Fox is a great, small venue within walking distance of Wakefield City Centre and very close to Wakefield Kirkgate Rail Station, which is currently undergoing a refurbishment. The Snooty Fox often streams gigs live on the internet so if you can't attend then try and watch a gig to get some of the atmosphere of the venue. It's dark and dingy with t-shirts from bands who have played there adorning the walls and ceiling, great lighting and bars on the stage, which are very convenient for the more acrobatic and agile performers to use as posing props. When I arrived Psychobabylon had already started and were playing the song Trash, which was fortunate as it's my favourite Psychobabylon song. [...]

The inspiration behind the event is young Blaze Shields-Pettitt, an otherwise lively, rugby-playing and heavy metal-loving little boy who suffers from Severe Bilateral Hydronephrosis, a condition whereby both of his kidneys are stretched and swollen, and which affects one in 600 people. In Blaze's case, it was diagnosed during ante-natal scans: his condition is complicated by the fact that he also suffers from Vesicoureteral Reflex (VUR), a condition which reverses the flow of urine between the bladder and kidneys.  After numerous operations – all of which Blaze faced with a bravery and humour which would be envied by many adults – five years ago his parents, Darren and Dawn, came up with the idea of combining their own lifelong passion for heavy metal with their desire to show their thanks to the nursing teams at the hospital by raising invaluable funds.  [...]

He is going to bring a new level of excitement and energy to Megadeth that the fans are going to lose their minds over. I have nothing but respect for my previous drummers, but this is going to absolutely KILL! Back in 1989, Megadeth originally worked as a three piece – guitar, bass and drums – when we laid down the framework to 'Rust In Peace'.  I want to thank the other members of Lamb Of God for allowing this opportunity to take place for all of us in the metal community." Bassist David Ellefson added: "Chris has been an endearing friend to us in Megadeth for many years now, and he truly appreciates our music and its legacy. I have to admit to being very worried about a Tuesday night in Glasgow too, for all Audio is a fantastic venue for a gig such as this. Glasgow punters can be notoriously fickle when it comes to midweek gigs but on this occasion thankfully it wasn't just a superb turnout, but a superb turnout for all the bands on the bill. The Colony live in Glasgow Kicking the evening off were Stirling rockers The Colony who were warmly received by a busy venue, which was great to see. Too often the first band of the night has a tendency to be playing to just a few punters but this was a wonderful start, helped by the fact that these boys know fine well how to rock. Frontman Peter Cullen gets the crowd going from the off, a theme that was to continue throughout the night from all the bands, and he struts front and centre throughout their 30 minute set containing tracks from EP Romper Stomper and [...]

It's a great set that includes Americana, Country and Rock influences to the music.  They really do go down well with the crowd – so much so that when their 30 minute set came to an end they'd already started packing away before the loud demands from the crowd for another song resulted in them setting things back up and giving the crowd what they wanted.  An excellent start to the night. By the time Ian Siegal came on, the venue was so packed that moving wasn't really an option.  Tonight is the second to last show on the tour, and as he tells the audience, a lot of his friends and family are there, so it has the feel of an end of tour party.  He kicks off with one of his own songs, that features on his latest album (One [...]

Now after a continuous period of playing live gigs, working the pubs and clubs the four guys have produced this little self titled teaser of an EP. Just three tracks long, but filled to the brim of brilliantly written, played and produced musical talent, in the space of little over 12 minutes this quartet of young musicians play Country Blues Rock, Jazzy Rock, and finish off with a magical melodic rock ballad with a nice modern twist. Now with a surname like Mikkelsen, Seb obviously has some Danish heritage in his blood, and this can be heard in his style and delivery. Listen closely and you might hear a few faint comparisons of Thijs Van Leer, but without the yodeling and whistles on the track 'Leave Me Be '! They have an individual sound which is heavy on the bass, complemented by intelligent and well thought out drum playing and fronted by the rhythm and lead guitars which bring it all to fruition. One thing missing though, Seb!  His vocals just curl and caress the tunes like a warm electric blanket. So, is [...]

Sweden has always produced cracking bands in the past, from all genres but Doom being my personal passion, I was drawn like the proverbial Moth to the flame by Heavydeath, a band that are pretty active when it comes to releases, throwing out the odd demo track as they go about their business. This full length album though, is a shining beacon. Kicking off with the deliciously atmospheric 'Ascending', trundling along at an almost static pace in places, the crackling guitar riff, steered by a wonderfully subdued drum sound that works so well in being authoritative, and yet subdued. Melting seamlessly into 'Road To The Fire', which whilst maintaining the atmosphere musically, offers a great foil for the foreboding vocal sound to pitch in to complete the menacing mosaic. As an album, the band have obviously put an immense amount of (black) heart and soul into its creation. Not being content with merely gathering a thorny bouquet of individual tracks, they have succeeded in spawning a body of work that is as [...]

Evil Never Sleeps this Saturday (28th March) at Percy's Cafe Bar at the Star Hotel, Whitchurch. This is a free entry show with a guest band, food and there's a charity prize raffle to raise funds for Manchester and Cheshire dogs home. Founded in 2011 by Andy Smith, a few line-up changes along the way see the three piece line up they have today. A friend of mine introduced me to these guys when he sent me the track Bones and asked if I'd be interested in reviewing the debut album. I was instantly hooked by Bones, starting with one, two, three, four taps of the drumsticks then straight into some catchy riffs and a great rhythm, which made me want to get up and dance round the living room! It's got a really feel good vibe and a big band sound to belie the three musicians. Last of The Dogs reminded my very much of American alternative rock band the Violent Femmes with a few dog style yelps thrown in along the way. With the name I [...]

Mammoth Mammoth - Vol IV Hammered Again

It was back at the tail end of 2012 that I was introduced to "a whole lot of rock and roll mixed with dirty riffs and skanky licks" when I reviewed Mammoth Mammoth's previous album… and I enjoyed it a lot. Fast forward a little over two years, and it's great returning to this rabble rousing bunch of Australian degenerates (and I use this term endearingly too). Volume IV, Hammered Again is more of this dirty stoner rock that, if you loved before, you will love once again. I'm actually finding myself enjoying this album far more than Vol III, it feels punchier, carries more drive, and maybe a touch more aggression too. Punkish opener Life's a Bitch instantly takes you back to Hell's Likely and is reminiscent of a bunch of Aussies having a couple of tinnies around the barbie and a big ripper of a sing-song. I hope the guys don't mind me painting a stereotypically Australian image here, but that's what's in my mind! At least until they follow this up with a great change of tact, ripping into the more straight ahead rocker, Lookin' Down the Barrel. It's great stuff; [...]

They filmed the event, posted the results on YouTube, and within a couple of weeks, the clip had accumulated over five million views. It's now topped out at 10 million. Pretty impressive, right? For Steve 'N' Seagulls, this was a bolt from the blue, but then, as history shows us, the greatest stories ever told tend to start in a stable… Yes, a stable. Now, the band is gearing up to release Farm Machine on Spinefarm on May 12. "Finally it's complete!" exclaim the band. "And the fruits of our labour please us. We are now preparing to take on the world!" The band has just revealed the video for its take on another AC/DC classic—"You Shook Me All Night Long." The video features hilarious moments in the barn – as well as awkward moments at the ice hockey rink. First on the bill, Dublin's Stereo Nasty play 80's style heavy metal.  Unfortunately, they open to a half empty room but this doesn't damped their enthusiasm.  With their hard hitting guitars and thunderous drums they grab the small crowd assembled by the balls with the opening chords of their set.  The substantial range of Mick Mahon's vocals is evident as the verse slips into the chorus and away they go.  As the singer tries to encourage everyone to come to the front – "cause we don't bite" – 'Black Widow' has a passionate band ply their trade with amazing effect.  'Death Machine' follows and the small crowd are really enjoying this performance.  As they close their, set this quintet have won some new fans. Shredhead Usual for many gigs in Glasgow, including Audio, the first band came to the stage at 7 pm. These guys – Shredhead from Israel. Recently it became quite fashionable to have guys from Israel supporting you as the first band… Anyway, this extreme metal band seemed to be quite good choice for that – very energetic guys on the stage, fast and quality music, super talkative and very engaging vocalist. If the crowd seemed to be quite small in the beginning and passive as well, by the end of the Shredhead show it was nearly full and more responsive. The mission of warming up – succeeded! Less than an hour later since the gig started, just five minutes to eight, the Polish death metal invasion on the stage started. With a lot of fumes, like hedgehogs in the fog, Hate began their show [...]

Some of the new song titles are: "Stronger Than Steel", "In Another Time (From Ashes We Rise)", "Stand Your Ground" or "To The Ends Of The Earth". "Stand Your Ground"  is a loosely based concept album, about the problems facing America and the world, and the belief that many people have, that we are heading into an era of strife and conflict. "Stand Your Ground" will include new songs, as well as several recently unearthed, unreleased and never recorded compositions written in the '80s. Interesting that they describe themselves as Monster Rock as I did pick up influences of some stadium fillers such as 30 Seconds to Mars and Foo Fighters along the way as I listened to the twelve tracks. I'm not going to cover each track individually just an overall impression and I'll pull out some of the elements I picked up. On first listen I thought of the aforementioned and also elements of American Fangs, Nirvana, Rancid and Falling in Reverse. The latter not in a specific song but in the overall feel of the album and the way the band combine a mixture of gruff vocals with a more melodic singing style, reminding me of Falling [...]
