Another contender in the overcrowded, glutted digital music revolution, Scotland's Aventus put their spin on rock and roll with their latest disc, called Valley of the Kings. The recording has a warm, analog feel to it, and is nicely balanced and enjoyable. The band mix doomy, sludgy riffs with more uptempo, modern, melodic hooks. Overall, they present a late 1960′s through early 1970s rock and heavy metal sound: very "retro". The four-piece band has a distinctive European "continental" sound, which is refreshing to American ears! It almost sounds like they've adapted traditional folk melodies in to rock and metal songs, a device which found it's greatest success with the "pagan" metal subgenre. Some of the riffs are very Sabbath-esque in that they're almost drone-like, presented in a long repeating sequence. The band could definitely improve their tightness or timing – some of the riffs are "off" enough to be distracting.
