Slaughter and the Dogs - 'Let's Do It' USA Tour 2015 Manchester Punk Rock band Slaughter and the Dogs celebrate their 40th Anniversary this year. There is currently a Kickstarter campaign under way to raise funds for a special one-off anniversary gig to be held somewhere in Manchester, the city where it all began, withSlaughter and the Dogs – 'Let's Do It' USA Tour 2015 Manchester Punk Rock band Slaughter and the Dogs celebrate their 40th Anniversary this year. The gig will, hopefully, take place in October. Blues Pills - Islington academy, London - 22nd April 2015

First up tonight was The Pearl Harts.   Unusually, they're a two-piece band - other than the Graveltones they're probably the only two-piece I've seen. Unlike the Graveltones, both members of the Pearl harts are petite ladies. They took to the stage in front of a very quiet venue, but as they played the venueFirst up tonight was The Pearl Harts.   Unusually, they're a two-piece band – other than the Graveltones they're probably the only two-piece I've seen. Unlike the Graveltones, both members of the Pearl harts are petite ladies. They took to the stage in front of a very quiet venue, but as they played the venue steadily filled up, so by the end of their set it was busy. With one member on drums and vocals and the other on guitar and vocals they're surprisingly loud and powerful, and sound great.  Whereas in say a five-piece band, the notes from the various instruments tend to merge together at times, with just drums, guitar and vocals then you hear every single note that is played. It's a great set, and I made sure I stopped at the merchandise stand at the end of the night to buy a copy of their CD. Next up was RavenEye, a three-piece band.  They sounded great – great rock music with some lovely guitar work.  Musically they're a good fit with Blues pills, so it's no surprise that they go down very well with the crowd tonight. Bringing forth their 12th studio album, Sweden's Unleashed has, with Dawn of the Nine, successfully continued an aggressive, fairly melodic saga. Their previous release, Odalheim, released in 2012, began this journey. Let's pretend you're a new fan, perhaps just introduced to death metal a little while ago, and your virgin ears have never heard Unleashed. If that's the case, this disc will tear the seat off your pants and drop your jaw to the floor. From the pummeling, constant double-bass drum sonic pressure, to the low-pitched menacing growled vocals, to the blazing fast guitar solos woven into every song, Dawn of the Nine is a high-speed chase – an adventure in sound and prose through past Norse mythological battles. It is mid-tempo to high speed, fairly melodic and yet fairly dissonant, fairly brutal European death metal done right. Unleashed even borrows from rock and pop music's dirty little secret to "winning listeners over": adding subtle nods to their peers or influences (with titles like "The Bolt Thrower", or making allusions to church burnings, or using the phrase "hammer battalions" repeatedly, and so on). The cast list reads like a veritable rock and metal who's who. Based on the pedigree present, "Rise Of The Animal", the latest long playing offering from Wolfpakk, promises great things. Happily, I can report, it delivers on those promises... in spades. From the outset they nail their colours firmly to the mast with the mighty Rider Of The Storm. With its relentless bass drum rhythm driving this untamed beast of a song, howling and stalking it's prey complete with that classic, semi-operatic vocal sound we all know and love… Add to that a razor sharp guitar and what we have is the setup for a great album. Sock It To Me does exactly what it says on the tin with it's classic 80's glam vibe and sensibilities with a 21st century upgrade… We're moving quickly through the gears and the aforementioned pedigree is already starting to show itself by the time it reaches the inevitible harmony guitar part which is more a welcome surprise than a predictable inclusion. Afterlife - Ivory Blacks Glasgow, 24/4/15

Friday night in Glasgow saw the much awaited headline show from local boys Afterlife, almost exactly a year after I first saw them open for Bonafide at the Cathouse.  That gig marked the last gig I ever went to without earplugs, as I was deaf for four days afterwards.  This band plays loud.  Last night'sFriday night in Glasgow saw the much awaited headline show from local boys Afterlife, almost exactly a year after I first saw them open for Bonafide at the Cathouse.  That gig marked the last gig I ever went to without earplugs, as I was deaf for four days afterwards.  This band plays loud.  Last night's venue has no photo pit, and I'm not the tallest person you'll ever meet, so there I was leaning on a speaker to steady myself on my tiptoes when I realised I was never going to get a clear shot because the speaker was making my arms vibrate! The Colony The show was opened by The Colony. Having been working all week on recording their second album they arrived in Glasgow tired by their own admission, but put loads of energy into the show and by the end of their set had the crowd firmly on their side. Most people there probably weren't aware of them before but I'm sure they made some new fans last night. Monument & Outloud - Barfly, London - 18th April 2015

The night kicked off with 2 cards of 25, a London based Hard rock band.  It's certainly an unusual name which presumably has some meaning, but ignoring the name, what you have here is a very good hard rock band.  Singer Diego Gutierrez has a good voice, and is helped particularly on the higher partsThe night kicked off with 2 cards of 25, a London based Hard rock band.  It's certainly an unusual name which presumably has some meaning, but ignoring the name, what you have here is a very good hard rock band.  Singer Diego Gutierrez has a good voice, and is helped particularly on the higher parts by a female backing singer.  The band all look to be having a great time on stage and they do an excellent job of warming the crowd up, and their cover of the Guns'n'Roses hit "It's so easy" certainly went down well. Next up was Agent, which is where the night went wrong.  They're a Prog rock band and a pretty good one, but just didn't fit in with the other bands on the bill – one prog rock band alongside three rock bands meant they didn't seem suitable.  They did sound good though and went down well, but despite starting on time they overran and protested when they got cut off by the sound engineer.  It's a shame this show decided to add a fourth band (there were only 3 bands on the rest of the tour) – which even if things had run [...]
