Mastodon - 'Once More 'Round The Sun'

Mastodon - Once More Round The Sun artwork
There's a saying about first impressions being misleading, and this certainly was the case the first time that this reviewer listened to the latest, sixth full-length offering from Atlanta's finest musical export.  The initial wave of reaction which not so much swept over me but lapped mildly at my ankles was one of being under-whelmed. However,There's a saying about first impressions being misleading, and this certainly was the case the first time that this reviewer listened to the latest, sixth full-length offering from Atlanta's finest musical export.  The initial wave of reaction which not so much swept over me but lapped mildly at my ankles was one of being under-whelmed. However, it would be fair to say that 'Once More…' is very much what could be described as a "grower" – as the more you listen to it, the more you get into its groove.  Certainly, it lacks the immediacy of its predecessor, 'The Hunter', and that perhaps explains the initial feeling of disappointment – and, indeed, "wtf?" – as it fails to grab you by the balls immediately and force its attention upon your addled rockers' ears.  Rather than delivering a sucker punch front and centre, it dances around the listener, probing and jabbing and looking for an opening through which to squeeze itself into your listening psyche and therein embed itself… But, when it eventually finds its way through, the effect is as hypnotic as that which you have come to experience from a Mastodon album – and also a slightly different beast [...]

In a world whose airwaves (depending upon your station of choice) are filled with classic rock, alt-rock and a variety of genres that end in "core", there is no doubt that The Rocket Dolls have a fight on their hands with finding the right audience for their grunge rock material, but with 'Eyes' they stand the best chance they have got. Opening with some solid riffs on 'Poisoned Speech', this trio show what they are made of and the direction in which this album is going to take us, but not without its surprises. Nikki Smash's vocals on third track 'Delerium (Reprise)' are a great amalgamation of 90's grunge, rock vocalists with hints of pop punk. A frantic drum roll from Benji Knopfler opens [...]

Recorded off the desk at CBGB's & onto tape in 1986, drummer Glenn Evans has unearthed this recording from his personal archive and has personally mixed & mastered the set up to a very high standard at his home studio. This 10 track recording pre-dates the release of their debut album 'Game Over' & includes two songs ('Meteors' and 'Satan's Call') that were never officially recorded, either on a demo, LP or as B sides. The record's insert contains a photo shoot inside the venue, live shots & old school gig flyers from the bands early years. Nuclear Assault were among thrash metal's most socially aware groups, making room for serious subject matter in their careening speed metal riffing. They also remained closer to the world of hardcore than most of their peers, and at their late-'80s peak [...]

It doesn't half pack a wallop too, for all it's a three song taster. produced by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat), the debut EP is indeed a tantalising taster of what's to come and shows great promise for a band that really only came into being at the start of this year. Opening track, Left Unspoken, immediately brings to mind the head on mix of styles that I mentioned above before leading into the far more aggressive title track. It's more gritty, driving and uncompromising rock than Left Unspoken with perhaps even undercurrents of punkish attitude. More importantly it's great, chunky, chugging stuff and sticks in the mind. Closing out the EP with the more complex Behind the Veil, Fire Red Empress show us their ability to mix things up with a pounding lead riff that breaks into atmospheric tones before reaching a huge middle section both vocally and musically. This track has a little bit of everything [...]

A problem with re-issued albums, and particularly those which are not given the 'benefit' of a modern technological 'makeover', is that they can sound very dated, of their time.  And, certainly, 'The Marriage…' has very much the feel of the Nineties about it:  but, great albums also stand the test of time, and that also is the case here, as beautifully packaged edition shows exactly why it helped to re-established the Steele's credibility as a viable metal band after a pretty dodgy period and helped them to progress to the most creatively and critically successful period of their career. In his liner [...]
