Hornets to mark release of 'No Faith' on March 31st with UK tour

"We never set out to make music with any particular sound in mind other than HEAVY," asserts James McAuley, vocalist of Belfast quartet Hornets; "Our sound is raw and aggressive, but we generally take influence from any form of music that makes interesting use of time signatures and grooves in the rhythm section." Whilst Hornets are undeniably a nest of musical fury, the quartet – completed by guitarist Andy Shields, drummer Richard McAuley and bassist Craig McCloskey – are also more creatively complex and ambitious than you might think, astutely reaching beyond the confines of 'genre' to find inspiration for their feral sonics. "We draw influence from bands that experiment with merging different genres," explains McAuley; "In these instances it's maybe not always music itself that's the direct influence, but it's more the idea of building bridges between different genres that interests us. I like to think that this fresh approach to the process has given us better results." The latest results of the band's leftfield songwriting approach is the raucous 'No Faith', a mini-album that stitches punk thrash into doom laden grooves in a snarling collision of mismatched sonics that somehow, some way, works. And rather brilliantly, at that. [...]

A corrosive audio collage where tar-black doom unites with expansive waves of noise to create a near smothering sensation of revulsion, suffering, and imminent degeneration, the six-track From All Purity is the true sound of the earth dying. http://youtu.be/NAYG5YjYdJQ Recorded at Electrical Audio and Soma Studios in Chicago with engineer/co-producer Sanford Parker (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Yob, Samothrace), From All Purity has reaped the love of fans and media globally. Rock-A-Rolla summed the album up as "a ferocious distillation of everything that is great about doom's limitless possibility". Metal Hammer when describing the album commented: "Like others peddling in the concentrated muck extracted from the sum of our fears, weaknesses and gluttonous urges… the shrieking of abomination and loss, the relentlessness of filthy riff after filthy riff is almost unbearable", whilst Terrorizer magazine concluded "This could well be INDIAN's nastiest, most accomplished work to date" The Chicagoan misanthropes will head to Europe this Spring for a short bout of onstage rituals alongside labelmates Inter Arma and Windhand on select [...]

However, given that Bristol is the closest place to Wales that tonight's headliners are playing on their current tour (until their Newport Helicop-tour in March), it's understandable that the place is full; indeed, as I walked down to the venue, the first voices I heard heading in the same direction all had Welsh accents. Legendary Bristol gig-goer Big Jeff is also in attendance tonight, which is generally a sign that a concert is going to be something special. SOiL The tour manager before the concert told me that the bands were ecstatic that tonight was sold out and so it proves when SOiL (8) come on and give us three quarters of an hour of American heaviness. From the moment they kick into Loaded Gun from their latest album 'Whole' it's a real spectacle; Ryan McCombs has never sounded better and he leads from the front with brilliant energy. Adam Zadel and Tim King are also in great form and touring drummer Mitch Gable is on fire – give that man a permanent contract, I say.  Shine On and [...]

At the helm of this mighty ship is the formidable Rich Walker who has steered the band through multiple line up changes and labels but has never bowed down to ideals of the "professionals" in the music business. Due to this attitude the band have a healthy back catalogue and are well respected throughout the underground. This is the bands first full release of new material since 1998's seminal "New Dark Age", in the interim we have been treated with the "Only the Strong Survive" compilation and various splits with the likes of Slough Feg and Reverend Bizarre. The ethos of the band is pummelling epic doom and metal, make no mistake there is no room for casual bystanders; you are with them or against them.  Opening with "Fortress England", an instrumental with a clean picked intro and a delicate melody until halfway through a nose breaking riff charges in which makes the same sort of impact as Maidens "Ides of March", it's a warcry to prepare for the rest of the record. "I Am the Hunter" contains a driving rhythm with the [...]

Joined on Bass by Jim Hunter, October 31 started out as a three piece but, several line-up changes down the line sees the current line-up with five members. Now signed to Hells Headbangers they re-released their 1997 debut album Meet Thy Maker and follow up The Fire Awaits you (originally 1999) on 21st January 2014. The lyrics seem to be mainly based on the Dark Arts – Witchcraft and Sorcery and the Dark Ages – Knights and Swords! With sixteen tracks I'm not going to go through each one individually, other than to say they were all classic heavy metal with lots of screaming riffs and powerful drumbeats. I picked up similarities to bands such as Megadeth, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. I also picked up some orchestral vibes in Behind the Castle Walls and When Darkness Cover the Sun. I'll pick [...]
