On a personal level we had no idea what we were letting ourselves in for. When the request to play first 3 albums in consecutive nights had came up we thought yeah this will be fun to do. Turns out it was probably the most difficult challenges we've had to do musically. There were a lot of hours spent in the rehearsal room getting these songs right for live as half of them had never been played before. The end result though was so rewarding for us. The album that we thought was going to be the most difficult was Gallus as it's more  laid back  than the others and we were a bit apprehensive of how the fans would react but for me it was the best night as everything seemed to gel just right. Q. Everyone knows Gun for one song, Word Up. It's a great song, but do you ever [...]

As the door time came and went, accompanied by the rumblings of a sound-check from deep within the venue, more than a few of us were glad of the patio heaters while waiting! Once inside the all black 500 capacity venue it was painfully clear that this gig was not going to be close to a sell-out, with the balcony closed off and sizeable merch stands on each side of the hall. Those fans who did come down early made sure there was no space on the barrier as the night's opening act, Skarlett Riot, took to the stage. Touring to support their 'We Are The Brave' EP, the Lincolnshire hard rockers opened up with one of the new tracks, the hard hitting 'Divide Us'. They may have started playing to a handful of people, but it took no time at all for that crowd to swell as guitarist Danny lays down killer riffs backed by a pounding percussion track from Luke while Chloe works the crowd with her [...]

Uriah Heap – live at Koko

I can say in all honestly however, the sheer venom in the performance from start to finish has a freshness that betrays the fact that they have performed these songs a thousand times before while at the same time reinforces what we already knew. Uriah Heap is a band that is still very much on top of their game and remains the standard bearers for British heavy metal. Right from the outset, the energy the band generates is at fever pitch. With more bang than a minefield the [...]

From the outset they nail their colours firmly to the mast with the mighty Rider Of The Storm. With its relentless bass drum rhythm driving this untamed beast of a song, howling and stalking it's prey complete with that classic, semi-operatic vocal sound we all know and love… Add to that a razor sharp guitar and what we have is the set up for a great album. Sock It To Me does exactly what it says on the tin with it's classic 80's glam vibe and sensibilities with a 21st century upgrade… We're moving quickly through the gears and the aforementioned pedigree is already starting to show itself by the time it reaches the inevitable harmony guitar part which is more a welcome surprise than a predictable inclusion. Just when you think you got the album pegged, the third track, "Monkey On Your Back" provides the first true surprise… This time the guitar sound has a more "high [...]

Here's what he had to say: Can you please give our readers the beginners guide to Red Enemy? We're a 5 piece metal band from Dublin, Ireland that has recently released our debut, album via Mediaskare records. If you like heavy, groovy music check us out! You've recently released your debut album "Red Enemy", can you give some more insight into the concepts behind its creation? The album itself took about a year and a half to write and pre-production was a huge part of this. Lots of changes were made, loose ends fixed etc. through rough demos. Each song has a different message/theme but the throughout the album the main theme covered is economic depression and how it affected friends, family and loved ones. There are also some personal songs thrown in the mix. Is there any particular message you wanted to put across to listeners? As a band we don't have a general message that we put out to our listeners. What we do is let people know [...]

I've caught them twice in Glasgow over the past few years and loved them to bits from the off. Anytime I chatted with them the conversation always came round to the release of the album and getting a hold of it to review for Planetmosh. Over the past week I've had nothing but that album in my ears and it is as awesome as their live performances have promised. A New Dawn in the Age of War is the, quite frankly, stupidly stunning debut from Divine Chaos and it is a non-stop force majeur of metal. Where do I begin with this review? They are majestically brutal melodic thrash. At times there's speed, at times there's brutality, they're like a heavier Savage Messiah. They have nods to the likes of Onslaught, Testament and Overkill, even at times reminding me of Sepultura or Slayer in their approach. Opening track Last Confession grabs you immediately by the balls with the ferocity of a wildly untamed animal. Hugely intense, packing one helluva wallop, it kicks the album [...]

The song itself is a blistering four and a half minute powerhouse of riffs, breakdowns and hooks to boot. The track showcases the quintet's new sound, which is much more aggressive than the sound crafted on their 2014 debut album 'Among The Damned'. The new video for 'Redemption' sees the band mercilessly performing to a kidnapped nun in a dilapidated, rotting church, while a priest hunts them down. The clip features an exorcism that shows members of the band vomiting mid performance. "We puked for real! They filmed the event, posted the results on YouTube, and within a couple of weeks the clip had accumulated over five million views, earning coverage in Guitar World, Revolver, Loudwire, Blabbermouth and Metal Sucks plus the rest of the elite metal media. For Steve 'N' Seagulls, this was a bolt from the blue, but then – as history shows us – the greatest stories ever told tend to start in a stable… Watch Steve'N'Seagulls perform 'Thunderstruck' (LIVE) BEFORE LONG, 'Thunderstuck' had racked up several million more views (it's now over 10 million!), and Steve 'N' Seagulls had joined forces with Spinefarm Records, with the result that these five 'barnyard boogiemen' are now on the verge of an international release for their debut [...]

Next up were All Hail The Yeti (AHTY), who straight away demonstrated their musical superiority over Shapes.  Their music is Metal rather than hardcore and clearly appealed to the audience a lot more as the crowd had moved much closer to the stage for their set.  Again it's a heavy set, but the songs were good with nice riffs and tunes.  This was definitely a good set and you could see much of the crowd enjoying themselves. 36 Crazyfists Finally though it was time for Alaskan band 36 Crazyfists, and by now the venue was [...]

Blues fans really are spoilt for choice when it comes to great albums this year – Dan Patlansky, Ian Siegal, Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart and Robin Trower are all releasing great albums, with the prospect of many more great releases later in the year.  It's going to be a tough year to judge what the best Blues album of the year is, but Robin Trower must surely be a strong contender. I can't stress how [...]

Metal 2 The Masses Northern Ireland Heat 1 – Belfast, Limelight 2, 21/07/2015

With the running order decided by ballot earlier in the after, newcomers Paradigm were the first to enter the arena, with their alt-rock vibe reminiscent of a nascent Soundgarden.  Caolan Derby's rich bass sound slightly overwhelms Robbie O'Neill's guitar in what is not the first unhelpful mix of the evening, but when the latter cuts through it does with a safisfying crunch and clatter, underpinned by Joshua Magee's precise and technically excellent drumming and overtopped by Jason Kerr's deep and confident vocals (albeit accompanied by a modicum of apparent stage fright…). Next up, Altus are a band who, over the past two years or so, have changed their musical style more often than most people have rashers of bacon on their Ulster fry (and personally I like about ten of them!), but the current incarnation , with their heavily-grooved death metal approach, is by far the strongest.  Bassist Terry McHugh, in particular, has [...]

Mabel Greer's Toyshop – Band Shot Mabel Greer's Toyshop, the prog psychedelic outfit which sprouted the first shoots of YES, has applied for a Guinness World Record for longest period of time between a band forming and releasing their debut album. The band, which release its first record New Way of Life on 9th March, formed 49 years ago in 1966. There is no current holder for the record… Founders Clive Bailey and Robert Hagger, joined by Billy Sherwood, Hugo Barre' and Tony Kaye, took the band out of the freezer and back on the scene after a 45 year gap, to bring the sounds of their past into the 21st century. In their heyday, Mabel Greer's Toyshop had a residency at the Marquee Club, where they played alongside the likes of Keith Emerson and The Nice. John Peel, a strong supporter and fan of the band also invited them to play on the BBC radio programme, Night Ride, which they did in March 1968. The line-up in those days included Chris Squire, Peter Banks and Jon Anderson. Mabel Greer's Toyshop morphed into YES in 1968 and has released a short six-minute documentary [...]

The Birmingham singer-songwriter has rock oozing from her core, and in keeping with her independent and DIY ethos, she has set up her own label 'Welcome To Pariahville', which is home to all of Pryti's releases.   Pryti's last EP 'Welcome To Pariahville' picked up widespread acclaim from the Rock/Metal community. So, I sat down today to listen to the album, hoping against hope that Eden's Curse had got it right.  Man have they ever got it right.  I defy [...]

Desecration - Belfast, Voodoo 19/02/2014

School night gigs in Belfast – possibly in common with most other locales – are notoriously difficult to fill, unless of course they involve a "big name" touring band.  But, increasingly, Thursday nights seem to be becoming the "new Friday" and so a healthy crowd of 70 or so grinders and deathsters braved the freezing

Tonight sees them play a venue that, whilst not being the smallest place they ever done, is tiny when you compare it to the venues they could be filling out instead, like the 3,000 capacity Roundhouse they've sold out twice over later on this tour. Why? Because they love playing intimate spaces – there's probably not even a thousand people present tonight. Second, they've given fans a real value-for-money package by bringing three support bands along and, as ever, they allow the people who have waited since silly o'clock in the morning in for their soundcheck before meeting them too. Fatherson As for the gig itself, you have to feel sorry for Glasgow's Fatherson (6); their brand of alt, indie rock is more suited to a slot supporting Kings Of Leon than the electronic driven synth-metal of tonight's headliners. As a result, they're playing to the wrong sort of audience and garner little more than lukewarm applause. It is a shame, because they seem a genuine bunch of guys and are great musicians – they're just quite out of place tonight. Still, they do better than Allusondrugs (3) who have been blessed with an utter tool of a [...]

Better still was the news of a new Scorpions album, Return To Forever to be released. It all started with the band planning on re-recording eight songs for a fan only release but new material was written in the studio so eight songs turned into a whopping nineteen! Twelve songs have made the cut to the standard format and sixteen to the deluxe edition. Return To Forever is certainly not the sound of the Scorpions treading water in their twilight years. In fact these songs are so vibrant it makes it my favourite Scorpions album since the 1982 release of Blackout. Yes it really is this good. Klaus Meine's vocal delivery is as powerful as ever on the rockers and sublime on the ballads. When it comes to rock ballads the Scorpions always deliver and the three here are as gripping as 'Holiday', 'Still Loving You', 'Always Somewhere', 'When The Smoke Is Going Down' etc.  As the teasing blue grass intro leads into the seismic riffs for the chorus [...]

This hacked me off a little as I have seen their full set before and liked them a lot so I was looking forward to seeing how they would strip themselves down so to speak. Anyway, by the time I arrived they were in the middle of a song that I think was called "Open Book" – a slow bluesy number that took very well to being played with just a couple of acoustic guitars and some drum brushes. Matty Penn's voice gets better every time I hear it, and this song really gave him the chance to show us his range. Next up was a much more bouncy uptempo song called "Tell Me Why" which allowed both Matty and the crowd to have a bit of a dance and featured proper drumsticks! Matty then explained to us that there are three ways to get over the breakup of a relatonship. You can hit the booze, find someone else for a bit of revenge sex or turn to music, [...]

The new Black Star Riders album, "The Killer Instinct" comes out on Monday. How do you think the album compares to the first one (All hell breaks loose)? I think its an evolution.  I think it's an evolution sonically and an evolution in song writing.  I think the difference is that when we went in to make this record we knew we were doing a Black Star Riders album as opposed to when we were writing for the last one you know there was still confusion as to whether it was going to come out under the Thin Lizzy monicker or not, so I think that was the major difference.  The pressure was different, probably a lot more confidence going into this record, and we'd toured together for almost two years as well. The lineup has changed since the first album.  Did that make a difference? Most of the songs were written before Robbie Crane joined the band, so we'd pretty much got everything down, but obviously what made a difference was what Robbie brought [...]

Your new album, Spirit on a mission is due to be released next month.  Where did the title come from? I was asked a while ago about who I want to be remembered as, and what came to mind after all these years on this planet, was a Spirit on a mission spreading the joy of music from a place of pure self-expression.  When it came time to choose a title for the album, that Spirit on a mission popped up straight away. Was it just yourself and Doogie who wrote the album? Doogie and I wrote most of it but then I also asked Wayne to come up with some ideas on his seven string guitar to add that element of seven strings to it and make it an all-round complete product. Are there plans to get the rest of the band involved in writing in the future? Yes.  We discovered by having Wayne add some seven string ideas and I'm adding my parts to it and Doogie his, we discovered a whole additional song writing [...]

One of the very few problems I have with the Black Metal genre in general, is that it can sometimes be quite inward looking and either unwilling or unable to branch out and spread its Batwings in the musical sense. Not in this case though, indeed, very much the opposite is apparent from the very beginning of this project. From the opening depressive strains of curtain raiser, 'A Profane Illvmination', I'm fighting against the tide, steadily being drawn into a dark world of sorrow and unspeakable horror. Thrown from pillar to  post by a superbly thought out and assembled musical helter skelter ride, one minute, weighted down by really powerful Doom riffs, the next catapulted in to the sulpher pits by Demonic blast beats, with the occasional ambient section to sooth the brow. Billing this offering as a mere four track is actually quite mean, as each song ranges from twelve to eighteen minutes in duration, ensuring value for your money if nothing else. In [...]

I went to Rockmantic 1 but couldn't make last year. This year Valentine's Day fell on on a Saturday so I was looking forward to a bit of Lurve as I braved the Friday 13th traffic and just about made it in time for the first band. All was going to plan when we had a couple of publishing deals put infront of our noses so we held off releasing it, deliberated, naturally, and after doing some homework we found that it's better to be unsigned than signed to a stinking deal. That left us up "sugar" creek with no paddle and we found ourselves without a label or publishing deal and still hadn't released the album. As all this was going on, Stevie (the drummer) became a father, Andy (the bassist) joined GUN and I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and had to go for major surgery, radiotherapy and there was doubts as to whether I'd ever sing again. So you could say it's been an eventful year and hopefully justifies why it's taken so [...]
