When the NWOBHM came to be in the late 1970's it brought forth bands of various rock/metal styles, some of which made the big league and some of which did not and split but reformed to give it another try. Birmingham based Quartz are a prime example of one of them who had the songsWhen the NWOBHM came to be in the late 1970's it brought forth bands of various rock/metal styles, some of which made the big league and some of which did not and split but reformed to give it another try. Birmingham based Quartz are a prime example of one of them who had the songs and even though they supported the likes of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Gillan, Rush and played at three Reading Festivals, unfortunately never got the recognition to propel them further. Formed in 1974 and originally known as Bandy Legs, they signed to Jet Records in 1976 who released their self titled debut in the same year, produced by Tony Iommi and toured the album supporting Black Sabbath. A second album Stand Up And Fight in 1980 was followed by Against All Odds in 1983 which proved to their last was the last we heard of Quartz until their reformation in 2011 with four out of five original members still in the current line up. So this latest release Too Hot To Handle is not new material but sixteen demo tracks originally written between 1981/1982 engineered by Phil Savage but have been re-mastered by Bart Gabriel, [...]

Additionally there's a CD booklet with notes from Malcolm Dome and Ricky Warwick as well as photos, pictures of magazine coverage and the usual bits like track listings and thanks. Tequila Mockingbird - T-byrds are go EP

"T-byrds are go" is the debut EP from Australian band Tequila Mockingbyrd.  The name is a nice play on the famous novel by Harper Lee (To Kill a mockingbird).  Tequila Mockingbird are a three-piece all-female band from Melbourne, and play some great rock and roll.  While bands like Airbourne or Massive have a sound that"T-byrds are go" is the debut EP from Australian band Tequila Mockingbyrd.  The name is a nice play on the famous novel by Harper Lee (To Kill a mockingbird).  Tequila Mockingbird are a three-piece all-female band from Melbourne, and play some great rock and roll.  While bands like Airbourne or Massive have a sound that is very heavily influenced by ACDC, Tequila Mockingbird haven't gone down that route.  Instead their music is rock with more of a punk influence.  With the catchy songs and that good-time feel this is perfect music for partying. They've certainly got some of that Aussie rock attitude though (the fact that they've included alcohol in the band name makes that clear for a start),  with "Shut me down" sticking a middle finger up at anyone who dares to tell them not to play too loud.  They've released a video for "Money tree" – check it out below. As the last remnants of what laughingly passed for "Snowmageddon" melted, turning Belfast's streets to slush and ice, the city's metallians and assorted other freaks braved the nevertheless freezing temperatures to head to the venue that is fast becoming the local mecca for same, the now iconic upstairs club room at Voodoo. Zlatanera open the evening's proceedings inside the suitably dark – and thankfully warm – venue with their dark, demonic grunt and grind.  Their set is characterized by three elements:  the increasing confidence of Andy Campbell, who over the 18 months or so I have been tracking this band's development has grown into one of the most assured frontmen on the Norn Iron scene; the huge, rumbling bass lines of Anthony McKee, whose fingerpicked style adds so much warmth to the sound; and the mid-set triptych of songs devoted to Satan.  The first of these, 'Master Of Ceremonies', pumps and thumps in a manner that, when you can feel your hernia vibrate you know this is seriously heavy shit, and the chanted "enter the cycle, enter the circle" refrain makes you believe in the dark powers far more convincingly than most faux face-painted black metal acts could only imagine in [...]

This is the second album from up and coming UK based progressive metal band HeKz. 'Caerus' follows on from the self-released debut album 'Tabula Rasa' which was warmly received. HeKz consists of Matt Young on bass guitar and vocals, Alastair Beveridge on electric and acoustic guitars, Tom Smith on electric guitars, James Messenger on keyboards and KirkThis is the second album from up and coming UK based progressive metal band HeKz. The production fills the speakers and gives a sense of expanse especially during the tom work in "Psychonauts" which chips away at your nerves building gradually and making subtle changes before a full scale sludge attack is launched. "Outside the Circles of Time" begins with a clean guitar and mellow vibe that the likes of Cult of Luna produce; it is a welcomed respite from what has come before. Legendary Swedish Viking death metal outfit Unleashed have just finished recording the as yet untitled follow up to their critically acclaimed 2012 'Odalheim' album. Scheduled to be released via Nuclear Blast in the spring, the album was recorded by producer and guitar player Fredrik Folkare in his own Chrome Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. I headed down to the Manchester Academy 2 on a cold Sunday, and luckily found some free parking within a five minute walk. As I was in the photo pit for first few songs, this review isn't as detailed as some of my others and when I came out the pit it was into a packed out and dark venue. I could barely see to make notes so apologies for the brevity but here goes. They opened with Iconocaust and whilst I missed their entrance onto the stage my ears were promptly assaulted by all breaking loose on that stage, loud, fast and brutal but not in a bad way. In the machine this week has been "Connected" the new long player by Swedish outfit, Care Of Night. Right from the outset it is clear that this album is going to take you back to the (arguably) glory days of rock… Opening track "Cassandra" glides in resplendent with retro piano and the glorious sound of a bygone age… Ladies and gentlemen, I'm happy to say that we're back in the 1980's… and not in a bad way. Those of us lucky enough to have lived through an era of rock music that was all melody and dynamic guitar solos will be happy to learn that, for the duration of this album at least, those days are back. The 'Frontschwein' term was carried over into World War II and it gives us the basis for this concept album: a German soldier's journey through the killing fields and theaters of death during World War II.  In a lot of ways this is a companion, or follow up, to the 1999 album 'Panzer Division Marduk', that explored similar themes. Tonight's gig was my first time since the work to upgrade the NIA had been completed.  Now named the Barclaycard arena - which is bound to cause confusion with the Genting Arena (the NEC), it's looking a lot better and the facilities are certainly improved.  That's lucky really as tonight saw thousands of metal fansKing 810 Tonight's gig was my first time since the work to upgrade the NIA had been completed.  Now named the Barclaycard arena – which is bound to cause confusion with the Genting Arena (the NEC), it's looking a lot better and the facilities are certainly improved.  That's lucky really as tonight saw thousands of metal fans descend on the venue for one of the most eagerly awaited tours for some time – Slipknot, Korn and King 810.  The tour sold out very fast and tonight's gig was definitely full. First up were King 810 from Flint, Michigan – a town sadly known for its high crime rates rather than anything positive.  If you've heard their album you'll know it's a heavy album with violence being a key theme, so it was no surprise that tonight's set was extremely heavy and aggressive, and really really good.  It's a short set unfortunately, but they certainly managed to make an impression on the crowd tonight, and I for one would love to see them in a smaller venue where their intense performance will come across a lot more powerfully than in a large soulless arena. This new album does indeed draw on the earlier sounds but rather than imitate, Blind Guardian have incorporated older elements into a fuller sounding orchestral bombast.
