At last and here now, we have the very much awaited full debut album from Blues Pills, called simply 'Blues Pills'. So where do I start with this one? Well to be very honest, when this new album landed on my door mat I thought, "Ok, an album full of songs we'd already heard onAt last and here now, we have the very much awaited full debut album from Blues Pills, called simply 'Blues Pills'. So where do I start with this one? Well to be very honest, when this new album landed on my door mat I thought, "Ok, an album full of songs we'd already heard on the two previous E.P.'s". To a degree that is what we have, but with a very pleasant twist I'd not expected!! The opener is 'High Class Woman' and my god it is too! With a beat like a Red Indian war dance and mixed with heavy bass rhythms from Zack Anderson, while hot on his heals is Dorian Sorriaux stroking his six stringed lover with the confidence of a veteran guitarist. We then get to listen once more to Elin Larsson who gives a blinding performance of this latest offering from the band. After a new song for me and the second track on the album,  'Ain't No Change' which has a mix of blues rock with some southern states gospel sounds thrown in for good measure. While they may use some sexy or provocative images to promote themselves, there's no sense that this is a naive group of girls being exploited – more that this is a group of women who are completely in control and use their image how they want to use it. After a successful Pledgemusic campaign they recorded  their debut album and released the download to Pledgers earlier this year.  They then decided they could make it better, so have delayed the release of the CDs to enable them to remix the album.  Now that process is complete Pledgers are able to download the improved version, and will be looking forward to getting their CDs very soon. British Power Metal band Dragonforce release their sixth album in August.  Entitled Maximum Overload, it's their second album with their current singer Marc Hudson, and will be followed by a Headline tour of the UK - and unlike many bands that announce a "UK tour", this one isn't jsut dates in England - they've gotBritish Power Metal band Dragonforce release their sixth album in August.  Entitled Maximum Overload, it's their second album with their current singer Marc Hudson, and will be followed by a Headline tour of the UK – and unlike many bands that announce a "UK tour", this one isn't jsut dates in England – they've got dates in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (plus a Dublin date), and they're playing a wide range of places – it's nice to see a band touring outside the usual few large places – London, Birmigham, Manchester and Glasgow. Brief comments on a few tracks…. Opening track, "The Game" features Trivium's Matt Heafy making a guest appearance and is the first song to be released from the album – check out the video below and see what you think. While Dragonforce are known for their listeringly fast guitar playing, they do play some slower stuff too, and one of those songs is "The sun is dead".  It's not a slow song – more mid-paced, but the slower guitar playing really does sound good – you need a break from the ridiculously fast stuff sometimes and this does the job perfectly. Viv Campbell gives cancer treatment update

Def Leppard/Last In Line guitarist Vivian Campbell has revealed that his cancer is in remission for the second time. Writing on his Facebook page, the Belfast-born guitarist (pictured right during an interview in his native city last year) said: "I'm currently in Boston and I did a scan on Tuesday morning.  The scan shows that the cancerDef Leppard/Last In Line guitarist Vivian Campbell has revealed that his cancer is in remission for the second time. "Great news, but I'm trying not to get too excited about it as I heard that same phrase late last year only to be disappointed again a few months after when it returned. "The plan is to do a stem cell transplant as soon as the tour is finished. However, to keep me in remission my doctors have recommended that I do another, third, round of the chemo (I.C.E.), so I'm back in hospital, all hooked up and doing my rock n' roll drugs.  Keef would be most proud!" Naturally, everyone at PM wishes Vivian all the best in his ongoing journey along the road to recovery.

The shorter of the two tracks (both odes to the goddess Luna) is the 5 minute 'Steppes', which fuses the stomp of the last few years of output from Satyricon with Andreas Kisser style guitar work. Rising from the ashes of As I Lay Dying, the four remaining members got together with Oh Sleeper vocalist Shane Blay, to form Wovenwar and record their self titled debut album which is out on august 5th on Metal Blade Records. Guitarist Dick Wagner dies

Former Alice Cooper guitarist Dick Wagner has died at the age of 71, following a short illness. Following a successful session career in and around Detroit, Wagner officially teamed up with Cooper in 1975, co-writing hits such as 'Welcome to My Nightmare' and 'Only Women Bleed':  however, the guitarist had previously played uncredited guitar parts onFormer Alice Cooper guitarist Dick Wagner has died at the age of 71, following a short illness. Following a successful session career in and around Detroit, Wagner officially teamed up with Cooper in 1975, co-writing hits such as 'Welcome to My Nightmare' and 'Only Women Bleed':  however, the guitarist had previously played uncredited guitar parts on a number of previous Alice Cooper albums,  including 1972′s 'School's Out.' Wagner had suffered a massive heart attack in 2007.  His death has been attributed to respiratory failure, after he developed a lung affection following surgery to unblock an artery. A statement on Wagner's website said: "It is with a heavy heart and great sorrow we have to let you know that Dick Wagner has left this world.  Dick had a huge heart, which is perhaps why it gave him so much trouble, it was simply too full of love, of music and life.  His creativity and passion will live on forever in the legacy he has left for us, in his music and his words.   We have so much of him to celebrate. This is a collection of carefully arranged, soulful (not soulless?)renditions that pull the listener deep into the dark one's silk-lined casket. A lot of bands have made the foray into the acoustic interpretation territory with varying results. Most notably Tesla – Five Man Acoustic Jam (win), Bon Jovi –This Left Feels Right (fail) and Slayer (NEVER). While some of the songs, like the less caustic 'Morgue than Words', do feel like they were belted out in one take and have a rebellious feeling of "let the song go where it wants to go", it is on the more calculated, ethereal moments that this album excels. Barcelona's Kilmara have released their third full-length disc, Love Songs And Other Nightmares, an 11-song sojourn into melodic metal. Very nicely recorded, mixed and mastered, the album doesn't have a raw "demo" sound that many acts seem to foster lately. Pleasant and paced well, the disc's tunes don't seem to lag nor race ahead. The band lists both power metal and progressive as influences, but don't let that scare you: it's not a "prog" nor "power metal" album per se. They do slightly experiment with syncopation and 'prog rock' segments and solos. What Kilmara does really well is write melodic hooks that are woven into both verses and choruses. That 'European' approach is very pleasing to ears that have become accustomed to (and weary of) dissonance and guttural screaming. Vocals are both nicely sung and (rarely) growled. Songs seem to be vocal-heavy, leaving few breaks for instrumentation. Instrumental breaks are tasteful and played "to serve the song". That said, the tunes tend to sound "comfort zone" – while quite enjoyable to listen to, they're not very provocative. I have put this off for as long as I possibly could. I am a huge Chris Jericho fan; he is one of my favourite wrestlers and I think that Fozzy have done an impressive amount of work as a band. There is nobody that I would like to talk metal with than Chris Jericho. That said, Fozzy's new album 'Do You Wanna Start A War' is very trying. I have tried to like Fozzy's sixth album, but the best thing about it is an Abba cover of "SOS". Metal and Abba were made for each other like hands and gloves. However, any band can do a decent Abba cover if they try a little. There is not a lot of praise that I can give to "Do You Wanna Start A War". The actual record is so unlike Fozzy that is is a little off-putting. It is such a departure that I can't tell you one full song that sticks out as good. The songs are all named after all the players in the cup final and there are no songs longer than 2 minutes. In these short blasts of insanity there is an amazing amount of riffs crammed in, insane time changes with stops, cymbal catches and turnarounds in the songs that will make your head spin. It is a harsh listen; however very compelling, you just don't know what is coming next, there is nothing straight forward about this album. It really interests me as to what motivates him to produce an almost continual cycle of Black Metal with amazing regularity, perhaps creative demons demand non stop deliverance, or of course, he could just be bloody good at it. "Enjoy Of Deep Sadness" is made up of a mere three tracks but each one is an epic tale of despair in its own right, clocking as they do in excess of eleven minutes each, this is no half hearted affair. Depressive Suicidal Black Metal (DSBM) is a sub genre that many are reluctant to immerse themselves in, afraid perhaps to delve too deep into the dark regions of ones psyche, fearing what we may find. Dublin band Specter's mini EP is a preview of what this band has to offer the Irish metal scene. Life rearranged is the first track of two. While there are elements that are admirable such as vocals and groovy riff, the track is not easily differentiated from Unwhole, the second track and lacks authenticity. All in all it's a good E.P but they're not reinventing the wheel when it comes to Groove Metal. Specter definitely have a voice and a place. Live at Wacken 2013 DVD

Last year the legendary Wacken festival in Germany welcomed 75,000 fans to watch over 120 bands spread over seven stages.  Unlike 2012, 2013 was notable for the beautiful hot sunshine that lasted almost all weekend with just a couple of short downpours.  If you haven't been then it's certainly a festival that I can't recommendLast year the legendary Wacken festival in Germany welcomed 75,000 fans to watch over 120 bands spread over seven stages.  Unlike 2012, 2013 was notable for the beautiful hot sunshine that lasted almost all weekend with just a couple of short downpours.  If you haven't been then it's certainly a festival that I can't recommend enough. One thing that Wacken does each year is to release a DVD.  Now, just days before the 2014 festival, the DVD of last year's festival is here.  It's being released as a triple DVD, with 3x BluRay and 2x CD versions also available.  The DVD/Bluray versions feature 106 songs from 43 bands – now that is impressive.  The first disc alone is almost 3 hours of music, so that one disc is impressive, even before you make a start on the other two. Over the past four years, the Steelhouse Festival - held on top of a mountain on the edge of the breathtakingly beautiful Brecon Beacons - has established a reputation not only for the quality of its line-up but also for being one of the best value-for-money and most family-friendly events of its kind in theOver the past four years, the Steelhouse Festival – held on top of a mountain on the edge of the breathtakingly beautiful Brecon Beacons – has established a reputation not only for the quality of its line-up but also for being one of the best value-for-money and most family-friendly events of its kind in the rock 'n' roll universe. All three points – with a couple of notable exceptions within the context of the first (which we'll come to a bit later) – are extremely evident over the course of the weekend:  the value-for-money aspect is reflected in the fact that beer costs a thirst-quenching £3.50 per pint (or just £3 for those of us lucky enough to gain access to the VIP tent!) and burgers weighing in at a meatily mouth-watering four quid!  As for the family element – well, there are kids everywhere:  playing football up against the fences, challenging bands to frisbee competitions, building rainbows out of used beer cartons… and, more importantly, rocking out to each and every one of the 16 acts – with the aid of suitable hearing protection, of course! Ten or 12 years ago, the sight of large groups of people dressed in full camouflage gear and sporting various guns, knives and other assorted artillery (including bazookas – and pirate swords?!) would have had the guys at the now redundant cop shop a few hundred yards from this venue sending for a battalion ofTen or 12 years ago, the sight of large groups of people dressed in full camouflage gear and sporting various guns, knives and other assorted artillery (including bazookas – and pirate swords?!) would have had the guys at the now redundant cop shop a few hundred yards from this venue sending for a battalion of re-inforcements.  But, that was then and this is now – and the now is a promised return to Belfast of the faux heavy metal commandos ArnoCorps.
