U.D.O - Steelhammer - Live from Moscow

My first reaction to hearing that U.D.O had a new live release coming out was one of surprise - after all they released "Live in Sofia" just two years ago, and since then they've only released one album.  OK the 2012 release was a live CD whereas this is a DVD/Blu-Ray as well as CDMy first reaction to hearing that U.D.O had a new live release coming out was one of surprise – after all they released "Live in Sofia" just two years ago, and since then they've only released one album.  OK the 2012 release was a live CD whereas this is a DVD/Blu-Ray as well as CD release, and there has been a lineup change since 2012, but even so it seemed a bit soon. My main doubt was over the track listing – with only one new album released since "Live in Sofia" would this album be suffiently different to appeal to fans?  Well after comparing the two I'm impressed – there is almost no overlap – in fact I think there's only one song that appears on both live releases.  That's pretty impressive, and the reason is that the Moscow concert is based heavily on the latest album, Steelhammer, with six tracks from that album included in the live show.  U.D.O has then departed from the usual setlists and played a very different set including plenty of songs that don't get played very often. It's only a month since The Bermondsey Joyriders released their double A side single "Brian Jones (The real true leader of the rolling stones)/Johnny Thunders was a human being", and now they're releasing their third album.  Surprisingly considering how recently the single was released, the songs from it don't appear on the album - probablyIt's only a month since The Bermondsey Joyriders released their double A side single "Brian Jones (The real true leader of the rolling stones)/Johnny Thunders was a human being", and now they're releasing their third album.  Surprisingly considering how recently the single was released, the songs from it don't appear on the album – probably the first time in recent years I've seen a band release a single ahead of the album launch without the single being on the album.  Slightly unusual then, but that does mean that the album contains 12 new tracks rather than 10 new ones plus 2 that fans have already got on the single. Whether or not you've heard of The Bermondsey Joyriders before, the members of this punk-blues trio are all experienced musicians – Gary Lammin (vocals / guitar) and Martin Stacey (bass) played  in the Joe Strummer-produced Little Roosters and Generation X precursors Chelsea respectively, while Chris Musto (drums) has previously played with Johnny Thunders, Joe Strummer and Nico. Musically there's a real old-school punk sound for some of the songs such as "Flamboyant thugs", whereas other songs blend in more blues or rock'n'roll leading them to sound like a cross between the [...]

The Ceaseless Sight is the third solo album from The Black Crowes founder member Rich Robinson recorded last year at Applehead Recording, Woodstock, New York.  His solo albums have been few and far between, possibly because they only come along when the Crowes are on@planetmosh reviews .@richsrobinson The Ceaseless Sight on .@theend records/Circle Sound Records. The Ceaseless Sight is the third solo album from The Black Crowes founder member Rich Robinson recorded last year at Applehead Recording, Woodstock, New York.  His solo albums have been few and far between, possibly because they only come along when the Crowes are on hiatus, but perhaps that's a good thing, because they are always a treat, well worth the wait.  As songwriter Robinson has always driven the Crowes forward with an unmistakeable sound, and it's magnified here as he steps out of brother Chris's frontman shadow and takes the spotlight himself.  He's accompanied by Joe Magistro (drums) and Marco Benevento (keyboards), and by guest vocalists Amy Helm and Katrine Ottosen, and Steve Molitz, who plays keys on "Down the Road." I'm struggling to pick a standout track because it's one of those albums that just flows as one cohesive piece of work.  That said, there are numerous influences.  One Road Hill, featuring guest vocalist Amy Helm, with it's folky hand-clapping conjures up images of playing guitars round the campfire.  I Remember features the kind of blues guitar that seems to read your soul and translate your feelings into the purest of sounds.  The same [...]

Marco Mendoza leaves Black Star Riders

Black Star Riders have announced the departure of bass player Marco Mendoza following the band's current US tour, which ends on June 22. Mendoza has decided to pursue other projects, after potential conflicts in schedules. His replacement will be Robbie Crane (pictured right), formerly of Ratt, Vince Neil and Lynch Mob. BSR guitarist Scott Gorham said:  "IBlack Star Riders have announced the departure of bass player Marco Mendoza following the band's current US tour, which ends on June 22. Metal Blade is happy to announce the signing of Dutch death metal act DICTATED! The furious female guitar tandem Yessica Otten and Sonja Schuringa stumbled upon Michiel vd Plicht and Henri Sattler during a heavy drinking session. While Henri was hustling to sell the girls one of his custom-made SK Guitars, they managed to talk businessMetal Blade is happy to announce the signing of Dutch death metal act DICTATED! After taking a creative break last year, Swedish Heavy Metal pioneers HAMMERFALL are fully recharged and back with a vengeance. The next chapter of the HAMMERFALL success story, '(r)Evolution', will be released September 1st via Nuclear Blast. The music was recorded in guitarist Oscar Dronjak's Castle Black Studios in March and April. Then singer Joacim Cans went to the United States to record vocals, working with James Michael (SCORPIONS, MÖTLEY CRÜE), who also assisted on predecessor 'Infected'. The album was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd in Studio Fredman, Sweden. Cover artist Andreas Marschall, the 'father' of HAMMERFALL's mascot Hector, has brought their icon back to life. Hector has featured on the band's artwork since the very first album and is once again included on the front cover of '(r)Evolution'. Chicago Rock Band The Last Vegas have just completed an eight date tour of the UK starting in Southampton taking in various places from Workington to Edinburgh and finishing off at The Asylum in Chelmsford.  I managed to catch their show at The Snooty Fox in.@louelladeville_ @planetmosh review of .@THELASTVEGAS and .@HeartbreakRmdy at .@snootyfoxlive Wakefield. The tour continues on to mainland Europe to promote their new album 'Sweet Salvation' released on 20th May 2014, the day I saw them. Support on the UK leg of the Sweet Salvation tour came from Cumbrian Rockers Heartbreak Remedy. Formed in Feb 2013, although vocalist Matty and drummer Stephen have played together for over 13 years. I saw Matty many times when he was bass player in Falling Red, and I've always found him to be a good showman, so I was looking forward to seeing him as a front man. The first song Cocked and Loaded had a Deep Purple Highway Star vibe with a good bass line and screaming riffs getting the show off to a good start. [...]

British metal bands Iron Knights and Def Con One team up for three shows in the UK this summer to promote their respective new albums 'Iron Knights' and 'II'. Def Con One is an established band founded over 10 years ago by guitarist Johnny Hunter and ex-Venom drummer Antton Lant. Ah, that most venerable of traditions, when one seeks refuge from the travails of the working day by relaxing with a nice cup of Darjeeling or Earl Grey and a chocolate biscuit (or, maybe, if you're lucky a bacon butty) before launching back into the fray once more… In the case of your battered and beleaguered reviewer, this particular tea break took the form of escaping from two days of driving forward the democratic process for a much needed, and enervating, dose of heavy fucking metal: feck yer tea, Mrs Doyle, get the pints in! Right from the opening chord, Dubliners AeSect – making their Belfast debut – rip through the crowd's craniums with the subtlety of a 40-tonne bulldozer with a foot-high pile of breeze blocks on its accelerator. So now to the present day that finds Ross playing with Death Dealer who he joined in early 2012 and they have released their colossal debut album War Master via Pure Steel Records. It could possibly not be any more metal than it already is and when I  played it I got the feeling you get when you hear your favourite album for the very first time. The band are at the top of their game featuring the  stunning vocals of Sean Peck who has to be heard to be believed which are heard within seconds of opening number 'Death Dealer'. His opening scream over a clatter of drums and barrage of riffs could shatter glass and is definitely up there with Rob Halford and Tim 'Ripper' Owens with his pitching.
